Introduction to Camera Movement
In this assignment me and my teammates worked on the assignment in order to analyze and discover certain types of camera movement. Camera Movement is a technique that helps the viewers understanding on how a camera moving enhances the story. Specific camera movements help enhance viewers understanding without unnecessary editing. Camera moving does a great job in influencing viewers emotions without having to add extra effort. Overall camera movement is a necessary good because all it does is help the movie.
The camera operator is the one responsible for camera movement. A great camera operator is James Cameron who has done phenomenal work on avatar. James does a great job capturing the world of avatar and conveying the many emotions on characters just from camera movement alone. Christopher Nolan who has made one on the best comic book films is also great camera operator as he emphasizes the cold but calculating person that is the Joker through camera movement is also shows the Batman as someone who is a symbol of justice or civilians but a symbol of fear for criminals both characters are see panning out is specific frames like the Batman jumping off the building because he understands that he is helping fuel criminals. The scene where batman shoves the Jokers head is iconic because of the great camera movement techniques being exhibited like tilt when the camera tilts alongside the Jokers head. The scene where Two faces face explodes is a great example of a crash zoom as we see his face zoom in quickly and then zoom out quickly. In the Terminator when the Terminator is driving under a bridge and explodes the other terminator is also a great example of the boom technique and the pan technique because the scene slowly moves away from a huge explosion. These examples alone are not even the best examples of camera movement proving that when done right it can be the most helpful and impactful thing in a film.
Two techniques that I learned more about from this assignment were zooming and panning. The exercise made me realize how many examples I have seen on zooming and panning and its importance. Zooming in film is great for transitioning or trying to put more emphasis on a character in film. Panning is great for putting less emphasis on a character. These techniques were fun to analyze and helped my understanding of the exercise.
