Preliminary Exercise 1: Barthes’ Theory of Denotative and Connotative Signs Semiotic Analysis Table
The main concept of this lesson was to learn how to find denotative and connotative meanings through signs. Semiotics are signs and symbols and how they are interpreted. Roland Barthes is a French philosopher, theorist, and critic. Roland Barthes had theory's that broke down how to read signs and how to interpret them the Semiotic Theory. Signs are usually indicators for other items. Connotations and denotations are basic interpretations of signs. A rose can be seen as love or passion while a black cat could have a denotative interpretation of bad luck.
The objective of the assignment was to do a semiotic analysis on certain symbols and find connotative and denotative meanings for them. We had a selection of six symbols and we had to find four connotative meanings. Through this exercise I was able to find out connotative and denotative meaning for symbols I had never found them for. I also learned what connotative and denotative meant. The analysis went very well and allowed me to learn about semiotics.
